Book Review: Arctic Drift, by Clive Cussler

As always, Clive Cussler’s latest novel stays right on top of current geopolitical events. Arctic Drift, set in 2011, centers on global warming and the financial crisis.

The crook in Arctic Drift is a Canadian energy empire billionaire by the name of Mitchell Goyette who is publicly admired for his green technology businesses, while concealing his heavy involvement in natural gas and oil.

South of the Canadian border, the United States faces a financial crisis of unequaled of proportions, a crisis intensified by the looming boycott of the U.S. by the international community if the country does not cut its greenhouse gas emissions from coal burning and automobiles.

The American president pins his hopes on Canadian natural gas to replace the coal used in many of the country’s electricity generating power plants, as well as the gasoline used in cars. The U.S. would thereby make substantial savings on expensive imported oil, while at the same time being able to meet the international demand to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.

But of course, this desperate play by the U.S. gets exploited by Goyette to the fullest. Publicly, he’s a hero to the environmentalists because of his role in developing wind power and finding solutions to carbon dioxide sequestration. Out of the public eye and unknown to all but a few, Goyette has major holdings in the Melville gas field of the Canadian Arctic, as well as the Athabasca oil sands of Alberta.

The unconscionable Goyette strikes a deal with the American government to sell nearly limitless supplies of Melville natural gas at market value, which would help the U.S. avert the escalating energy crisis, a financial meltdown, and an international trade boycott. But when Goyette is able to secretly work out a better deal with China, he does not hesitate to break his agreement with the U.S. and leave the southern neighbor high and dry.

(The truth is, in the real world it is hard to see how Goyette’s business would survive the breach of such a huge and important contract. But it makes for a good story line.)

But Goyette’s double-dealing with China and the U.S. pales in comparison to some of his other crimes, which include political assassination, intentional dumping of toxic waste that kills humans and wildlife, theft, vandalizing, bribery of high ranking officials, and worst of all, nearly instigating a war between Canada and the U.S.

Of course, what Goyette fails to take into consideration is Dirk Pitt, the hero of twenty novels by Clive Cussler, including this most recent installment. In the end, Pitt manages to wreak havoc with all of Goyette’s ill-willed plans.

The co-authorship between father and son Cussler in Arctic Drift appears seamless. Their penmanship cannot be separated. Whatever parts of the book were written by the younger Cussler, he did a magnificent job of adopting his father’s inimitable style. (Intentional oxymoron!)

Arctic Drift is a thrilling read in classic Clive Cussler style. You will not be disappointed. It may not be the edge-of-your-seat non-stop action from cover-to-cover as in some of the older Cussler works, but it’s still an exciting, intriguing and brilliantly written story that keeps your attention and makes you want to keep reading. The thugs are as smart as they are sinister, and the heroes as pure as Arctic ice.

Britt Hellman lives in North Carolina with her spouse and three children. She operates her own copywriting company from her house. Clive Cussler has been one of her favorite writers since reading his Trojan Odyssey, a Dirk Pitt Novel, in 2003. She writes reviews like this one on Arctic Drift, by Clive and Dirk Cussler, for the fun of sharing that excitement.

Wall Painting Ideas

So here you are, you’ve bought your new house! Its a bit of a mess since the previous owner was in a hurry to sell and had been in the middle of renovating. You don’t really mind that though, since it gives you the perfect opportunity to do your house up exactly the way you want it to be done.

However, now you need to decide where everything should go and which colours would suit which rooms, but you don’t have any wall painting ideas.

So, you eagerly look through your new keys and wander through your new house. The moment you step in through a door ideas hit you. That stylish standard lamp you bought a while ago would look fantastic over there, and you’re pretty sure that your existing sofa set will fit in this other room. And you know that a mahogany table would look stunning in the hallway. The only thing you really don’t have much of a clue about are wall painting ideas.

You certainly don’t want to simply splash on a few coats of bland paint and have done with it. What you want is a masterpiece! Something that you can look at with pride every time you see it and, of course, you want to be able to keep looking at it with pleasure for quite some time to come as well, so it shouldn’t be too domineering.

But where can you get some decent wall painting ideas from, and how do you go about getting the wall painting done? There are a few ways that you could go about it. The easiest being if you have an artistic streak in you, then you could always get your wall painting ideas off the cuff, so to speak and paint the walls as you like. Unfortunately, most of us aren’t very artistic and we are hesitant to pick up a brush or roller and apply the first coat of paint without any guidance. In this scenario then, you will need some help.

You could begin by hiring a professional decorator to help you decide what would look good or you could sit down and watch some DIY programs on the TV, where they show some pretty good ideas on what to do when decorating a house and will even give you some great wall painting ideas.

If neither of these options is viable for you though, you could just try going down to your local hardware store with fabric swatches and colour sheets of your most prominent pieces of furniture and enlist their help on stylish wall decorating ideas.

You may come up with a mixed bag of wall painting ideas with this last suggestion, but I found that it was the one that worked best for me and now I’m very proud of my slightly eclectic house. It reflects who I am just perfectly.

How Do Dogs Communicate?

Dogs are just about the most intelligent of household pets. If you take the time to look, you will see that they have the ability to communicate with humans, other dogs and even other species. They do this with body language and voice. Their signs are made with the their eyes, ears, eyebrows, head, mouth and tail.

Their voice is obviously not the same as ours, but they use pitch in their barks, whines, whimpers, pants, growls and howls and their gestures are made with their whole body and every part of it.

You can always tell a self-assured and therefore higher ranking dog, because they hold their tails aloft. Dogs, like all other animals, including we humans, have an inborn sense or their place in society. This is because dogs evolved in packs in the wild, just as we evolved in communities. which is why they fit well into our human society.

There is a pecking order within their group, as within human society. The subservient dogs submit themselves to the stronger dogs, which is why dogs lower their tail when they feel unsure of themselves. When dogs fight for dominance, the fur on their tails stands up and they have this trait in common with other animals. They do it to show that they are being serious in front of their adversary.

A dog that is uncertain what to do will wag its tail slowly. A bit like you or I might give a weak smile, unsure whether to smile openly or glower. They are in a process of working out whether they should accept the status quo or fight. Excited dogs wag their tails very fast and if the dog’s hip wiggles along with its tail, it means that the dog is in submissive mode to a higher ranker. A pet should do that to its owner, as you have become the leader of its substitute pack.

When dogs get aggressive they show their fangs, the same as humans. If all of the teeth are visible, it indicates that the dog is prepared to bite or attack. We do the same unconsciously. People often bare their teeth and snarl insults, before a fight. However, they also show teeth when they smile but this is an indication of submissiveness, again as we do – compliance here meaning a recognition that a fight is unnecessary.

With a dog, the number of teeth on display differentiates between a smile and a snarl. In a smile, a dog only shows the front teeth, but in a snarl the dog reveals all his teeth and gums and makes an aggressive noise.

Ears are a good sign of the dog’s level of attention. When the ears are vertical and forward facing, it means that the dog is alert. But if the dog is stress-free, its ears will lie flat. However, some breeds do not have as much control over their ears.

Dogs bark to defend their territory, which comes to mean their boss’ territory, which should signify your property. However, barking is their usual speech so you will have to learn the difference between friendly play barking and aggression in your dog. It is pretty obvious though.

Study of your pet is the key, because, although all dogs are the same as in all humans are the same, there are minor differences. They are not hard to learn, just spend some time with you dog and keep your mind open and it will become very clear to you.

Dry Sensitive Skin

Dry skin is very often sensitive as well, which only makes it harder to care for. Dry sensitive skin feels tight because of the deficiency of natural oils and has a tendency to develop small expression lines that will evolve into wrinkles. Moreover, this type of skin makes one more exposed to allergic reactions, rashes, capillaries breaking and sudden flushes. Therefore, the taking care of dry sensitive skin proves quite a challenge at times. It is worth stating the fact that it afflicts people regardless of age, colour or gender.

You need to follow rigorous rules in your selection of cleansing, moisturising and make-up products if you have dry sensitive skin to take care of. First of all, you have to reduce the amount of products you put on your face. The fact is, the more chemicals you come into contact with, the higher the chance of developing rashes. The products ought to be perfume-free and hypo-allergenic so that you don’t develop red, irritation blotches. Blusher and foundation can pose some problems for dry sensitive skin.

Try not to put on too much make-up in order to allow your skin to breathe adequately. When you are shopping for make up, other than looking for the hypo-allergenic label, you should also try to ensure that they are oil-free. Foundation and blusher should be water-based because they won’t clog your pores. Furthermore, oil-absorbing foundations are not recommended for dry sensitive skin, because they will make your skin even drier.

It is also not recommended that you use exfoliants or astringent products on dry sensitive skin because they could irritate the thin epidermis. The same thing has to be said in relation to washing: over-washing of the face means eliminating the natural oils that lubricate the skin, which will result in an increased dryness.

Furthermore, the day-time moisturiser ought to have an incorporated SPF (sun-protection factor) of at least 15. However, although you may like sunbathing, dry sensitive skin doesn’t really permit you to enjoy such outdoor pleasures.

If you have dry sensitive skin, don’t expose it to the sun in order to tan it, because you will only achieve early ageing and possibly even quite serious health problems. And last but not least, a warning must be signalled that you should change some of your cosmetic products for other ones along the lines mentioned previously.

If you decide that you should to switch to another make of skincare products, it is very important that you test the product on a small section of skin in order to test whether it triggers any allergic reactions.

Skin care is vital in these days of pollution and ozone deficiency. If you need information on Dry Skin Care Products, please visit our website entitled Hypoallergenic Skin Care Click here to get your own unique version of this article with free reprint rights.

Stylish Home Decorating in Black and White

When people think about stylish home decor and making changes to their home, whether it be one or two rooms or the entire house, the first thing that usually springs to mind is colour. Generally people choose colours they are fond of or those which correspond with pieces of their existing furniture. When searching for ideas for stylish home decor, one idea which is perhaps too often overlooked is decorating with the two basic colours (or shades, to be more accurate) ” black and white.

Black and white, used in home decor shows style and creates drama and pizzazz. Top interior designers say that every room in the house can benefit by using a touch of black. Black is a colour which anchors and grounds a room. Adding sophistication, black is definitely a colour that demands attention. Stylish home decor ideas for a home using black may include accessories such as light fixtures, trim or furniture. Black serves to add definition to focal points in a room. Black is just one colour that stands out or makes a statement, but it is definitely one of the most outspoken!

Decorating with the shades of black and white in your living room decorating ideas, provides a clean, fresh, elegant air to the atmosphere of the room. This combination can be used in any room in a home making it a sophisticated area. Black and white are often used in contemporary home decorating and frequently used to highlight other colours in the French Country style. It may be hard to visualize but there are many ideas for decorating a home using combinations of only these two basic shades.

The floor is a great area to start when you’re having living room decorating ideas. Black and white vinyl tiles laid alternately make a beautiful chessboard pattern and gives a clean and elegant appearance. Black marble used on the floor, accented by wide white baseboards is another beautiful idea for decorating a home. Laying white ceramic tiles with a black border or simply painting the floor black or white and using pattern stencils of the opposite colour for decoration is also really stunning. These all are great ideas for re-vamping a room.

Can you imagine anything more perfect than white walls? Painting the walls white or even an off-white would make an ideal backdrop for accessories such as artwork framed in black. What magnificent living room decorating ideas! Elegant black window surrounds or black shutters against a clean, crisp white wall would definitely create an air of sophistication. Maybe a glass-topped table with a black iron rim and black chairs? These are great ideas for decorating a room using only black and white.

A bedroom decorated using black and white would be beautiful stylish home decor too. A black or white iron bed-frame, covered with a striped black and white duvet or eiderdown. For the pillow cases, you could use either all black or all white and could add throw cushions in the other colour.

A nice leather black or white armchair in the corner would certainly accent the room’s stylish home decor. Then you could have the white walls with an elegant piece of artwork, framed in black hanging on it. That would surely add to the contemporary feel of your stylish home decor. Black furniture against the crisp white walls would look really neat and tidy and you could jazz up the room with accessories such as pewter or silver candlesticks, jugs or vases.

If you think the stylish home decor needs a little colour to complete the look, perhaps a throw or cushion in a bold color like red or gold, for the chair in the corner of the room would be enough to accent the room. Ideas for decorating a home are numerous. However, finding one that suits you and those that live in your home with you is important. It’s nice to do something radical and off-the-wall but remember you must be able to live with it for quite a while.

An Introduction To Astronomy

Despite the fact that astronomy is the oldest science, it is still at the forefront of not only scientific thought, but also that of the public at large. Who hasn’t gazed up at the stars while walking home late at night and wondered about something larger? Having said that though, the ancient people of definitely the northern hemisphere, but probably both hemispheres, knew the movements of the stars and planets better than the majority of us do today.

They knew even then, thousands of years ago, that the majority of stars seem to appear in the Eastern skies at night and travel on circular paths. They also noticed that some ’stars’ were ‘wanderers’ (we call them planets) and that sometimes they went ‘against the flow’.

They also named groups of stars that we now call constellations or even galaxies and knew that those visible in the winter were different from those visible in the summer.and that others were visible all year round. The average common man of 5,000 – 10,000 years ago almost certainly knew more about the movement of the celestial bodies than the average common man of today does. (I mean men and women here, of course).

They learned how to calculate or at least locate the extremities of the sunrise and went to extraordinary lengths to mark those positions with huge stone structures, such as Stonehenge in the United Kingdom, probably to facilitate the location of certain positions of the sun or other planets or stars, which may have been important to their religious beliefs or crop cycles.

In 1609, Galileo invented the first artificial device for studying the stars and planets. It was the first astronomical telescope and through it he was able to see objects millions of miles away that no one had ever seen before. Because of the deductions he drew from his observations, he clashed with the Roman Catholic Church and was often in serious danger for his life, so radical were his discoveries.

But mankind was not intimidated, and since then we have gone on to build ever bigger and ever better telescopes with which we can even detect radio waves, microwaves, X-rays, infrared waves and gamma waves from outer space. Forty years ago, we even travelled to our Moon. and we have sent probes to eight of the nine planets in our Solar System, as well as to several comets and asteroids.

Where will we go next? That decision was always up to the government of the United States and the old USSR, but now there are other contestants in the field. What will China or India want to explore with their possibly slightly different outlook on life? Or will it be just a question of financial benefit?

The world may be in a state of change and power may be moving from its traditional seats, but it has not diminished interest in questions that scientists think can only be answered in space. These are exciting times in the science of astronomy, but then man has always found astronomy enthralling .

Country Home Decor Style

Your house is finally clean and tidy and you sit down and put your feet up for a minute with a nice cup of coffee by the side of you and you pick away at your cake. You feel worn out but it’s that good kind of weariness when you know you’ve done a hard day’s work and you have no regrets about it. A feeling of contentment settles about you and you look around you with satisfaction.

A magazine lies in front of you appealingly within reach and you give in and pull it to you, intent on enjoying a well-earned rest. The main cover story jumps out at you, entitled ‘Country Home Decor’. Naturally you flip through eagerly to that very section, you had only just read an article on some stylish country home decor about turning a house into a small country retreat in another magazine and it had greatly interested you.

Page upon page of the magazine is filled with what can only be described as the most perfect country home decor you can imagine. You gaze longingly at the various styles and furnishings you see gracing the magazine’s pages. A quick look up from your magazine assures you that your own modest abode hasn’t changed magically into one of those lovely country homes you were just looking at.

A heavy sigh passes your lips at this realization and you go back to gazing at the magazine spread. You had never thought that you were a person who could stand the whole country home decor style but now upon reflection you think you just might be able to.

Without your even realising it you find yourself marking the pages that interest you the most, making small mental calculations on how best to achieve the same effect but on the smaller budget that you have at your disposal. After all, it wouldn’t do to fork out for that lovely dresser and have to go without your freshly ground whole bean coffee now, would it?

However, you could definitely buy that beautiful table runner without any problem. And if you donated all those modern chrome coffee mugs and dinner sets to charity you wouldn’t really be splurging, would you, since you would’ve done your best for charity and donated all these things unselfishly?

What about swapping your jazzy blinds for something that’s a bit more in the country home decor style, and while you’re at it perhaps you could even swap that ugly lampshade you got as a Christmas gift for something a little more country.

The only thing that is left for you to do now is to lie back and enjoy the fruits of your labours and gaze with beaming pride upon your newly redecorated home. Furnished, naturally enough, in the best country home decor style that you could cull from every source that you came across, like that first magazine which spurred it all off way back then.

Plastic Shower Curtains

There was a time when fabric shower curtains went the way of the dinosaur and glass shower doors were all the rage. Like most fads, however, common sense took charge and the fashions of yesteryear have come back around full circle. You’ll now find that fabric shower curtains are all the rage once again and are readily available for purchase at most stylish home decor stores.

However, don’t rush to get rid of your old glass doors just yet. The cleanliness and smart look of the glass doors seem to be firmly established with some people. Adherents of glass doors will swear by them and will even sometimes be ready to lay down their reputations for them.

You’ll find, when discussing fabric shower curtains, that their owners are complacent and will smile when questioned about their preferences. Naturally, they’ll defend their fabric shower curtains but they also admit to seeing the advantages of glass shower doors as well. No dripping from the bottom of the curtain, no constantly damp curtain folds that need to be separated out each morning in order to discourage mould.

Best of all is the easy cleaning granted by glass doors. However, as the fans of fabric shower curtains will also tell you, glass doors have their downsides as well, the biggest of which being that if you let the cleaning of the doors slide for even one week, stains will begin to form along the sides where they’re attached to the wall and some of these prove to have a stronger will than you do.

And if you don’t give the glass shower doors a regular cleaning, your otherwise nice clean bathroom will start to look rather grubby. The reason though why fabric shower curtains are an all out favourite of many people in the know, is for just one reason and one reason only. This is also what leads these people to have a smug smile on their faces even after they’ve just spent the last half hour cleaning their bathroom. Fabric shower curtains are disposable and so can be changed quickly.

Yes, that’s the one whopping big reason why fabric shower curtains are still a firm favourite of a lot of people. Have you ever tried replacing your glass doors on a regular basis? It just won’t happen and its doubtful if it will ever happen within three years, unless that is you take a hammer to it.

So, now you understand the reason for that mysterious grin and why fabric shower curtains never really went out of fashion. Convenience, more convenience and still more convenience. So if you’re considering of swapping from your glass shower doors to the more convenient fabric shower curtains don’t be put off by the initial job that awaits you.

Once you remove those doors, your life is bound to become easier, and if it’s not, just exchange one pair of fabric shower curtains for new ones. If nothing else it’ll make you feel better!

Interior Design Colleges

Have you got a flair for interior design? Are you always redecorating your room, or telling your friends and family where to put that piece of pottery they bought yesterday? Then, the best place you could be to utilise your skills is one of the many interior design colleges or design schools that are around these days.

With a little help and a little mild prodding from your friends and family, you could find yourself well on your way to setting up your own interior designing firm. Then you’d be in the place that everyone wants to be: doing a job that they really love doing. So, what are interior design colleges and what can you expect them to do for you?

Well, to start with, the number of interior design colleges that you will come across in your search will be large and at times even overwhelming. If you do a search on the Internet or just call up the colleges and ask for a course catalogue you can then make an informed decision about which of the interior design colleges you choose to attend.

If your life is too busy at the moment but you still want to fit in a course or two, you always have the option of studying at any of the Internet interior design colleges that seem to abound these days. Or perhaps you could even try a night course or correspondence course in your pursuit of interior design knowledge.

All of these interior design colleges teach basically the same things and will develop your own natural abilities. You’ll learn everything from scratch and will be given an insight into why certain colours match well next to each other and why other colours don’t.

You’ll learn when to apply the rules that you’ve been taught and when to break them. But above all, you’ll learn how to mix your natural design abilities with the knowledge that you’ve gathered at the college and blend it into a mixture that is greatly pleasing to the eye.

Moreover, if interior design colleges are your thing then you can be assured of coming away with a lot more than only knowledge on how to place what colour next to what colour to get a stunning effect. By taking at least one or two courses, or even by doing the whole range of courses offered to you, you’ll be expanding your natural interior design abilities at least a hundred fold.

There’s nothing quite like having a confidence boost to shore up your own innate skills and to be able to tell someone with absolute confidence that you are a bona fide interior designer.

Choose Golf Shoes Wisely

Your swing may well change with experience, your accuracy and distance will definitely improve with practice, and you’ll become deadly accurate with a putter, but you will always do these things while you are standing on your feet.

So, your feet need to be quite comfortable, don’t they! Have you ever got a blister whilst walking or running? It’s all you can think about and it ruins your enjoyment of the experience of what you are doing. Don’t let uncomfortable golf shoes ruin your game of golf too.

This is one sphere where you shouldn’t let your natural frugality make the decision for you. You will be wearing these shoes many times over a long period of time and they should be considered a good investment in your game of golf.

Comfort, not cost, should be your main concern when you are buying shoes. Your foot should not move at all at the heel when you walk, yet your toes shouldn’t feel constrained. Have your shoes fitted professionally and walk around in them before you actually buy them.

Serious golf shoes should be waterproof so that your feet remain dry in damp conditions. Good socks are important too; they will take perspiration away from you feet, keeping your feet dry and comfortable.

All golf courses prohibit metal spiked shoes in the effort to protect their delicate greens. Purchase shoes that allow you to change the rubber spikes easily, and while you’re there, purchase some extra spikes. You never know when you may lose one. You should also replace the spikes when they become worn.

You have many things to think about while playing golf, but your feet shouldn’t be one of them. When it comes to golf shoes, quality counts.

If you are thinking about buying new golf shoes, or if you are just into your game of golf, please go to our website called Golfing Tips for Beginners Get a totally unique version of this article from our article submission service
